This Nature-Based Embodied Soul Work experienced in a 1.5-2hr class outlines key practices & principles drawn from 30 yrs experience with soul & nature focused dance ritual. This includes lineages of masters Kazuo & Yoshito Ohno (Japanese Butoh), Anna Halprin (Scoreography & WilderDance), Elizabeth Cogburn (Long Dance) and Christa Ray (Shamanic Voice + Bodywork). The class will convene outdoors and draw our inspiration from elements of nature within & without; offering potent tools for sensual, imagistic & emotional capacity building while honoring & the integrating wildly indigenous aspects of being into our day to day activities, creative process, somatic healing work and collective field of consciousness.
Maureen emphasizes principles & practices from the Kazuo Ohno Dance Studio, including lessons from both Kazuo & Yoshito Ohno. She is honored to be passing on this lineage and integrating these profound teachings with her own inquiries based in bio-mimicry, sensation, imagination, intermodal (poetry/drawing/movement) arts and sacred geometry. Participants will have an opportunity to experience the body as universal material & metaphor, discover personal moving mytho-poetry in relationship with space, body, others and the natural world. Each dancer will leave with a useful "tool kit" of intermodal art (drawing/movement/writing/voice/music) practices and an exemplary personal repertoire mined from his/her own body & soul that can develop into soul-charged performance material if desired. Practice sessions are a launching pad wherein Maureen will coach participants in defining & embodying their callings of heart + soul into meaningful performance that is grounded in day to day action and interaction.
Stirling Cova ~ Bellydance, Hiphop, B-girl, Sexy styles
Stirling has been dancing and performing for the past three decades. Her broad spectrum of experience stretches from Appalachian clogging to contact improvisation, with a taste of many styles along the spectrum between. She has studied under many teachers around the world, from Tribal Fusion with Ashley Lopez of Datura and Egyptian Bellydance with Cassiopea in Portland, to Tease Studios in Denver, The Divine Playground in Indonesia, and a certification in Circus in Performance from Greentop Circus in Sheffield, England. She is trained as an Educational Kinesiologist, and incorporates exercises that activate both hemispheres of the brain in cooperation through her dance practice.
Ecstatic to be offering up her experience and ideas as a part of the Performance LAB Intensive, Stirling feels that the focus of any true practice is to follow the path inward, to "get inside" the music, let go of perception of the self, and tune into spatial awareness as a language. Her dance and teaching style directly reflect this.
She will be facilitating an exploration of Bellydance, spanning many traditional tribal styles progressing into Tribal Fusion. Many moves and concepts will be shared, from basic to advanced, including: toxim/ maya, umi, bodywaves, bellyrolls, flutters, shimmies, spins and turns, footwork and layering, arabic, camels, laybacks, backbends, drops, zippers, twists, undulations, isolations, mudras, snake arms, and head balancing.
Stirling will also be leading sessions focused on street dance stylization. You can expect hip hop glitchy b-girl goodies including isolations, popping, locking, tutting, dropping, gliding, top rock variations, moon-walking, c-walking, and twerkaba activation, and a sweet sexy balance of activating your enchanting burlesque nature.
Classes will consist of conditioning exercises that define and isolate/ activate the necessary muscle groups. The introduction of concepts and the basics of a move or style will be discussed, demonstrated, and committed to muscle memory through drills. Choreography illustrating the concept will be introduced and broken down. The main focus will be to confer into each dancers body and imagination what is possible, so that the style may become their own. Theory will be discussed, as well as the cultural history of each style.
To support the development of each dancers personal practice the importance of understanding and drilling fundamentals to build the vocabulary will be emphasized. Learning and personally creating both solo and group choreography will support this development. Exercises for coordination and balance, rhythm, posture, musicality( e.g. syncopation and timing) will be explored, all culminating in finding the groove/ flow/ steez/ swagger to freestyle and improvise.
Kait Chenoweth ~ Sound healer, musician, co-visionary

"When we open to the infinitude of the Heart, awakening the creative potential of our dreams unfolds with confidence and clarity"
Some evenings we will gather to relax and receive - other nights we will gather to energize and express ~ harmonizing and weaving our voices together; learning how to recognize, listen to and feel energy and sound in our bodies; and co-creating channeled spirit songs to unlocking energy and breath through our voice.
Kait is honored to serve and support you as you uncover your deepest truths with ease. It is her dream come true to envision communities of the heart and to co-create inspiring environments in support of radical authenticity through artistic expression and unconditional love!
Alicia Gervais ~ Breathwork integration facilitation, co-visionary
"Conscious connected breathing is a profound practice which opens us up to feel more radiantly alive, clear, and connected. "
Alicia is a certified life coach through Radiant Health Institute, a trained Breathworker with Clarity Breathwork and Nashville School of Breathwork, a Circle Facilitator, and most importantly a lover of dance. With her extreme sense of wonder, she is an open and clear channel to remind us of our true nature.
Alicia holds a safe and nurturing space for participants to integrate all the action at dance camp. She brings us together in a talking circle to connect with one another, practice reflection & intention setting, and gently guides a breathing meditation for one hour to a stirring playlist of music.
The result? A deeper connection to self and others, integration, relaxation, and inspiration.
The essence of the Circular Breath is breathing in a continuous flow, with no break or pause between the inhale and the exhale. Breathing through the mouth in this way for 1 hour, with eyes closed, allows a tremendous amount of oxygen to saturate the body. Through this deep and continuous way of breathing, our usual and unconscious ways of holding reality are relaxed & what flows is a personal experience guided by the subconscious and spirit.
Alicia Kathleen Gervais is a member of the Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan Tribe of Chippewa (Anishinaabe) Indians. She has a deep reverence for the seven generations who have come before her and is passionate about honoring Anishinaabe traditions in her life.
Alicia will be co-facilitating a Breathwork retreat before coming to Costa Rica! to train with and share her gifts. http://nicaraguayogaretreats.blogspot.com/
